The importance of potassium

Potassium is an essential electrolyte found mainly inside the body’s cells. It is required for normal cellular activity and helps maintain the electrical and chemical balance needed for many important body functions. The kidneys play an important role in regulating how much potassium remains in the body and how much is removed in the urine. A low concentration of potassium in the blood is called hypokalaemia. Hypokalaemia may occur because potassium is being lost from the body, insufficient potassium is being consumed or potassium is moving abnormally between the blood and the cells. Low potassium levels can be caused by many things including kidney issues, reduced appetite, certain medications or other illnesses. Signs of low potassium can vary and include inappetence, lethargy and muscle weakness. If you notice any issues in your dog or cat, contact your veterinary practice for advice, as there are numerous causes of these signs. Your vet will be able to test for potassium levels in the blood if they think your pet may be affected.
